I Am

I am honest and giving.
I wonder if people reincarnate.
I hear sounds of the keyboard.
I see my dream car.
I want to move out of my parents' house.
I am honest and giving.

I pretend to pay attention when Im really not.
I feel excited.
I touch my ink pen.
I worry that I will fail college.
I cry when I think of my parents and how hard they work.
I am honest and giving.

I understand everything in life doesn't come easy.
I say we all stop taking things for granted.
I dream of a better life for my parents.
I try not to underestimate the people around me.
I hope every single person on earth find peace and happiness.
I am honest and giving.

  1. So much good stuff happening in this poem. I see a couple of themes - one has to do with your parents. You are moving out, away from them in the first stanza. In the second, you reference how hard they work. In the third, you dream of a better life for them. This connection to your parents in all three stanzas creates a unity in the poem, a theme of being connected to them, and embarking on the rite of passage of leaving their home and truly owning your own life. Funny - even the idea of reincarnation is related to this, I think. Do we get more than one chance? Your reference to every single person on earth echoes this, too. Lots of good stuff going on here - I hope you consider working with this poem and revising it to make it even more potent!
